Cell Phone Plans

The Lifeline Assistance program is available for one wireless account per household. Separate households at the same address are eligible, including residents of homeless shelters and nursing homes. People with temporary addresses are also eligible. You are qualified if you receive public assistance such as Medi-Cal, SSI, SSDI, WIC, Section 8 housing or Cal-Fresh (Food Stamps). You may also qualify based on other types of household income.

Go to “Provider Search” at to learn about approved California LifeLine providers and their cell phone plans. If you currently do not have home or cell phone service, you can contact the California LifeLine Call Center at 1-866-272-0349 to identify phone companies in your area. (Español 1-866-272-0350).

If you think you qualify for California LifeLine, inform your home or cell phone company you want to apply for the California LifeLine discount. The phone company must be an approved California LifeLine telephone service provider. When you tell the phone company that you qualify, it will begin the application process for you. Click on Provider Search to find the approved home and cell phone companies in your area. Check out the Application Instructions for more details.

Only one discount per household for each residential address is allowed. The discount is available for either a home phone or a cell phone, but not both. Households cannot get the discount from multiple companies. Households that do not follow the one discount per household rule will lose the discount.
